The Ed Shoemaker Memorial
Trophy, another rotating award
honoring a second deceased ag
teacher, was presented the number
one demonstration team Bro
thersvalley Chapter.
Winners of the conservation
speaking checks, given by Keith
Largent in behalf of the conserva
tion district,* were first, Dennis
Stevanus, AVTS; second, Jona
than Smiley, Brothersvalley; and
Jeremy Schilling, AVTS, third.
Sports trophies for both basket
ball and softball were won by the
Meyersdale FFA Chapter team.
Brothersvalley was tops in volley
ball.
Extemporaneous public speak
ing winners were first Jeremy
Bartels, Somerset FFA; second,
Amy Gary, Somerset County
AVTS; and third, Jason Shuller,
also AVTS.
Winners in the prepared FFA
public speaking contest were first,
Carey Weigle, Somerset FFA;
second, Adam Shaffer, Brothers
valley; and third, Ben Shipley,
Meyersdale FFA.
FFA junior public speaking
contest winners were Don Speich
er, Brothersvalley, first; Doug
Deaner, Brothersvalley, second;
Billy Smith, AVTS, third.
Jeremy Wallers from the Broth
ersvalley Chapter was first in
creed speaking. Dan Nichols,
AVTS, was second and Elisha
Wilt, Meyersdale, placed third.
The 1995 FFA skills judging
contests were interview, wildlife,
horse judging, forestry, dairy cat
tle, livestock, floriculture, tractor
driving and small gas engines.

Forestry found Steve Benford,
AVTS, first; Joe Darby, AVTS.
second; and Dennis Stevanus,
AVTS, third.
Joel Smiley, Brothersvalley, led
dairy cattle judging. Second was
Bruce Hartman, Brothersvalley.
Third was Matt Hoffman, Somer
set.
In livestock, Jason Ickes, Bro
thersvalley was first; Rick Berk
ley, Meyersdale was second; and
Aric Tressler, Somerset was third.
Serena Porterfield, AVTS, was
first in floriculture. Heidi Wat
koski, AVTS, was second and
third was Genette Muro, AVTS.
Jonathan Smiley, Brothersval
ley, was first in tractor driving,
followed by Aric Tressler, Somer
set, second and Travis Stevens,
AVTS, third.
Winning the small gas engines
competition was the team of Josh
Glessner and Eric Lohr, Somerset
Second was Dusty Glessner and
Jeremy Walters, Brothersvalley.
Third was Jeff Knotts and Ben
Shipley, Meyersdale.
Heidi Dahlhammer, Wellsville.
the state FFA secretary, was guest
speaker. She was accompanied by
Kelli Zeigler, Newville, who is the
south central region FFA vice pre
sident.
Dahlhammer used her own first
FFA jacket with its many award
pins to illustrate how far she’s
come since first joining the FFA
organization. She was scared at
first, but willing to try something
new at the time.
