Old Lore, New Moon
The new Moon this month falls on Memorial Day.
Folklore regards the new Moon as a time to shear
sheep, cut lumber for bridges, cure whooping cough,
and go fishing. Weather lore says that if the old Moon
is seen in the arms of the new (or the faint outline of the
full disk l is illuminated by the bright crescent), a storm
is coming. Likewise, if you can't hang your hat on the
lower point of the crescent, rain is predicted. To see a
new Moon in your dreams signifies increasing
fortune and a compatible marriage.
In some cultures, new Moon
itivals celebrate the returning of the
ight’s illumination.
