Farming, Saturday, May 27, 1995 MfrUncaster DAIRY TIPS DR. RANDY LYLE, Ph.D. Growing and harvesting high quality forages is both an art and a science, with a little bit of good luck thrown in. Weather and soil type are dictated to us, but we can manage seed varieties, maturity at harvest, and silo/bunker conditions. How forages are fed to cows is also under our control. Some areas requiring attention are: * Corn silage variety - some seed companies are continually evaluating digestibility of their varie ties. this can help producers better select which variety of corn to plant to maximize animal per formance. Ask for digestibility information when selecting seed. * Stage of maturity at chopping - Immature for ages have higher digestibility than mature forag es. corn silage will have highest digestibility Paradise, PA 17562 717-442-4183 1-800-635-3592 Umonville, PA 19375 610-347-2377 EDDIE MORAN R D #1 Box 320 Jeffersonville, NY 12748 914-482-4199 UMBERGER’S MILL R D #4 - Box #545 Lebanon, PA 17042 717-867-5161 FRANKLIN FEED & SUPPLY 1977 Philadelphia Ave Chambersburg, PA 717-264-6148 BEDFORD FARM BUREAU Bedford, PA 814-623-6194 Everett. It is better to have some seepage from the silo than to have corn kernels passing through the animal undigested. * Bunker silo management - cover silage with plastic and weigh down tires to prevent air infil tration. Manage the face (surface) of the silage mass - if it is well packed, silage can be scrapped.off the face, with minimal silage falling to the ground, piling up and spoiling. * Innoculants - addition of lactic acid bacteria to silage can speed the rate of acid production during the Initial stages of fermentation. Silage quality will subsequently be improved.
