Savannah Crosses Atlantic
In 1819 the steamship Savannah began its Atlantic
crossing from Savannah, Georgia, to Liverpool,
England. Though called a steamship, the Savannah
carried only enough fuel to run 80 hours. Her 2914 day
eastward crossing was made mostly under sail. It was
many years before steamships (powered by paddle
wheels in their early designs) rivaled the records set by
sailing vessels. The clipper James Baines made the
Boston to Liverpool run in 12 days 6 hours, a record for
the voyage, which usually took
