The Berger’s home and her
blacksmith shop are built from the
logs, timbers, and boards from an
old bam. It faces a man-made
pond where two mountain streams
;onvergc. Behind it is their root
cellar in the side of a bank, the
smokehouse, and the beginnings
of a sugar shack (for processing
maple syrup), being built by farm
manager Sean Fowler.
Sean came to the Blue Moon
Farm from C.onnecticut in
November 1992.
He said, “I manage the animals,
bale hay, keep the buildings and

When Sean first moved to the
farm, some land was swampy.
They enrolled in conservation
programs to build the pond and
some stone strips in drainage
areas. They also planted six fruit
trees and six Niagara grape vines.
Tenant farmers Sam and Katy
Reist live in the original log
exposed farmhouse. They sell
organic vegetables at the market
in Huntingdon and to regular cus
tomers who pay for a guaranteed
amount of vegetables throughout
the year.

a short distance, the V* mile long
lane that connects the Blue Moon
Farm to the main road. Even with
the expressway not far from their
farm, the Bergers continue to
choose the road less traveled.
And, as Robert Frost says in his
poem The Road Not Taken, “I
took the one less traveled by. A nd
that had made all the differenc.'.”
