Mother’s Day Letters
Hilaria, an ancient spring festival to honor the mother
goddess, Cybele, may have been the precusor to
Mother’s Day. Medieval England celebrated
Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of Lent, when
apprentices got the day off to visit their mothers, often
bringing an almond-flavored fruitcake. In the U.S.,
several late-19th century attempts to honor motherhood
failed, until Anna M. Jarvis of Philadelphia began a
letterwriting campaign, around 1907, and
got Mother’s Day recognized at the
state level. In 1914, President
Woodrow Wilson issued the vss
national proclamation. See

eggs until fluffy.
