EASTERN TENT
CATERPILLARS ARE
HATCHING
The eastern tent caterpillars
have hatched or are in the process
of hatching.
Eastern tent caterpillars are one
of the first tree insect pests to
hatch in the spring. After they
hatch, the larva begin to feed on
newly expanding leaves of a vari
ety of ornamental trees.
They are most common on crab
apples but they can also be found
on some varieties of chary and
other members of the Rosaceae
family. These insects begin to spin
web-like tents that ate found in
branch crotches.
This is probably their most
noticeable characteristic. When
they are small it is difficult to dis
tinguish other characteristics.
These insects can completely
defoliate a tree in a relatively short
time. The best way to control
these insects is with a pesticide of
one kind or another. They are rela
tively easy to control at this stage
of their lives.

effective is commonly known as
“Bt”. “Bt” is a biological pesticide
that consists of a bacteria.Thc lar
va must eat the bacterial insecti
cide that has been sprayed on the
leaves in order for it to be effec
tive. It will not kill on contact
“Bt” is also somewhat specific as
it will only kill members of the
butterfly and moth family. “Bt” is
commonly sold under the names
Foray, Thuricide, Dipci, and Jave
lin. This pesticide should be
sprayed over the entire tree.
Other registered pesticides for
eastern tent caterpillar are carbaryl
(Sevin and Sevimol), chlorpyrifos
(Dursban and Pageant
malathion, and insecticidal soap'.
These are chemical insecticides
and do kill on contact.
The best way to control eastern
tent caterpillar using these pesti
cides is to spray on the “tent” in
the early morning hours. At this
time the larva congregate around
and in the tent. If the tent is large it
will help to open the tent with a
knife and spray inside also.
These insecticides are less spe
cific and will kill a wider variety
of insects such as honey bees.
Some of these chemicals can also
cause blossoms to fall. Care
should bo taken when using these
