Happy Birthday, Robert B!
The founder of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, Robert
Bailey Thomas, was bom in Grafton, Massachusetts
on April 24, 1766 229 years ago. The first of 12
editors and 23 publishers to concern themselves with
The Old Farmer’s Almanac, now in its 203rd anniver
sary issue, Robert B. put out 54 editions before he died
in 1846. The Old was added to the title from 1832 to
1835, and then permanently from 1848, to reduce con
fusion with competing almanacs. Now
collector’s items, the old issues still
crop up in attics, backhouses, and
bams around New England. The origi
nal issue cost sixpence (about nine
cents)
Everything has a beginning.
