More Than 80 Compete In First
UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) More than 80 beef cattle
enthusiasts from Maryland, New
Jersey, West Virginia, Rhode
Island, New York, and Pennsylva
nia competed in the first beef cattle
judging contest ever held in con
junction with the Pennsylvania
Beef Expo, held recently in
Harrisbuig.
The judging contest was added
to a slate of youth activities fea
tured annually at the Beef Expo,
which is primarily an educational
program and merchandising tool to
showcase some of Pennsylvania’s
finest beef cattle.
Cattle breeders from across the
commonwealth were receptive to
the idea and cooperated by provid
ing their cattle for use in the con

Beef Expo Judging Contest
test Contestants were required to
place six classes of beef cattle,
including March Angus heifers.
Simmental bulls, January Angus
heifers, Limousin heifers, prospect
steers, and Simmental heifers.
They also were required to
answer 10 questions about the
cattle for the classes of Simmental
bulls and Limousin heifers. The
questions were used to break ties in
the absence of oral reasons. Every
one competed as individuals in one
of three age divisions, including
beginner (12 years of age and
younger), intermediate (ages 13
through 20), and adult (21 and
older).
Rosettes were presented to the
top 10 individuals in each division,
whose scores are listed below.
