PSU Dairy, Animal Science Announces Distinguished Alumni

gan, a widely recognized member
of the Pennsylvania Senate, has
been named this year’s Distin
guished Dairy Science Alumnus
by Penn State’s Department of
Dairy and Animal Science.
His 23rd Senatorial District
includes Bradford, Tioga, Lycom
ing, Sullivan, and Union Counties.
Sen. Madigan graduated from
Penn State in 1951 with a B.S.
degree in dairy production. He is a
member of the Penn State Coaly
Society and the Delta Theta Sigma
fraternity. Sen. Madigan was a
dairyman for 13 years prior to

the House of Representatives for
four terms, representing the 110th
District, which includes all of
Bradford County.
In addition to many other
awards for distinguished service.
Sen. Madigan was named 1987
Man of the Year by the Pennsylva
nia Rural Electric Association and
Legislator of the Year in 1988.
1989, 1992, and 1993 by various
organizations.
From 1988 through 1993, he
served as chairman of the Senate
Labor and Industry Committee,
leading the fight to bring stability
to Pennsylvania’s Unemployment
Compensation System and saving
the commonwealth more than
$4OO million in interest payments
to the federal government.
For this and other efforts. Sen.
Madigan was named the 1989
Government Leader of the Year
by the Pennsylvania Chamber of
Business and Industry, that orga
nization’s highest public sector
honor. Sen. Madigan is the only
state legislator ever to be so
honored.
In 1993, Madigan received the
newly created Leadership Award
from the Pennsylvania Manufac
turers’ Association for his efforts

pensation system. This award was
created to recognize exceptional
effort and is not given annually.
Sen. Madigan is a member of
the Joint Legislative Air and
Water Pollution Control and Con
servation Committee, the Pennsyl
vania Public School Employee
Retirement Board, and the Gover
nor’s Advisory Council for the
Deaf and Hearing-Impaired. He
also serves as chairman of the
Senate Agriculture and Rural
Affairs Committee, vice chairman
of the Game and Fisheries Com
mittee, and is a member of several
other committees, including
Appropriations, Ethics and Offi
cial Conduct, Labor and Industry,
Local Government, and Veterans
Affairs and Emergency Prepared
ness.
In addition, Madigan is a trustee
of the Guthrie Medical Center in
Sayre and has served as an agri
cultural trustee of The Pennsylva
nia State University since 1970. In
1991, he was appointed to the
Board of Directors of the Pennsyl
vania College of Technology in
Williamsport. Madigan also is
director of the Pennsylvania Fore
stry Association.
