E2-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 22, 1995 UNIVERSITY PARK, (Centre Co.) As spring temperatures encourage grass to grow, farmers and homeowners will be mowing lawns with small lawn and garden tractors or riding mowers. Spending a few moments to check safety aspects can keep you and your family from harm, according to an expert in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences. Safe lawn and garden tractor operation begins before you start the equipment “Reports of garden tractors overturning on their opera tors have been rising,” said Sam Steel, senior research technologist in agricultural and biological engi neering. “Many overturns and other types of garden tractor inci dents stem from poor preparation. “Check the turf area beforehand to remove any debris that may be thrown from under the mower’s deck,” Steel said. “Sticks, rocks or children’s toys can be expelled at speeds approaching 200 miles per hour. A pas senger might distract the operator or cause the tractor to tip and overturn.” A careful tractor inspection before mowing is just as important for garden tractors as it is for full size farm tractors. “For instance, low tire air pressure can affect the steering and handling of the machine,” Steel said. “Make sure the wheels and mower deck are at the right height An improperly adjusted mower deck will probably gouge your turf and make mowing unsafe. Loose bolts, missing pins and dull and nicked blades also are hazards.” Never use replacement parts that are not the correct size. “Using RD 3 HCR 61 BOX 611 688 FRIENDLEA ROAD RD 1 RD 1 R D BOX 926 RDI 160 OLSON RD R D 1 BOX 414 A R D 3 405 A R D 1 BOX 308 F 1926 BOWMANSVILLE RD BOX 140 MEADOW LANE RD 2 R D 2 BOX 308 R D 3 BOX 178 7 WALNUT ST RD 1 R D 2 WEST GREENE RD PO BOX 176 10 U DRY RUN RD R D 2 BOX 220 1150 R D 2 255 AIRPORT RD R D 6 BOX 995 R D 1 BOX 86 RD 2 BOX 181 RD 2 R D 1 BOX 152 RD 3 147 SCOTT RD 2730 HILLTOWN PIKE R R 3 BOX 433 1700 BROWNSVILLE RD 2391 LIMEKILN RD R D 3 BOX 398 RD 3 20281 HAMMOND RD R D 2 BOX 2260 R D 1 BOX 222 A RD 4 641 S RAMONA RD 13886 MACEDONIA RD RD 3 RD 2 638 RAILROAD RD R D 1 BOX 70 50 MOUNTAIN VIEW RD R D 2 BOX 2267 RD 4 12403 NT PLEASANT RD R D 1 BOX 394 RD 1 3620 EXCELSIOR RD 3825 BALT PIKE R D 2 BOX 968 R D 2 BOX 518 R R 1 BOX 315 BERLIN (QLLCREEK EBENSBURG BERLIN FRIEDENS MARTINSBURG MILAN STONEBORO NEYERSDALE KITTANNING HYNDNAN NOHNTON OTTSVILLE FRIEDENS WINFIELD FRANKLIN RICHLAND COCHRANVILLE WATERFORD NEW WILMINGTON PINE CITY NY PETERSBURG GIIBERTSVILLE MERCER LEBANON SUSQUEHANNA MCVEYTOHN COLUMBIA CROSS BERLIN NESHOPPEN PERKASIE PERXASIE MILL HALL ROBESONIA DODGLASSVILLE ALTOONA SOMERSET CORRY PORT ROYAL EHLENTON MUNCY HYERSTOWN HATTSBURG COLUMBIA CROSS STOYSTOWN HOHRSVILLE ATHENS NYERSTOWN BANGOR DUBOIS KERCERSBURG NEW ENTERPRISE REEDSVILLE SCHNECKSVILLE LITTLESTOWN WOMELSDORF LEWISBURG KINGSLEY Small Tractors, Mowers Safely incorrect mower blades is a com mon mistake and often results in damage to the underside of the deck and a blade that spins too close to the exit chute,” said Steel. “Fingertip amputations are fairly common when people install a blade that is too long.” Never attempt to refuel a garden tractor when it is hot. “Gasoline spilled over a hot engine or muffler can result in a fire and serious bums,” Steel said. “Always allow at least five minutes for the engine to cool before filling the tank, and LEESPORT (Berks Co.) “Understanding and Reacting to the New Food Safety Regula tions” will be the subject of a meeting to be held on Wednesday, April 26, at the Penn State Univer sity Berks Campus from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. The meeting will review the - never refuel inside a closed build ing where fuel vapors can accumulate.” Steel offers these mowing guidelines for farmers and other small tractor operators: •Fill fuel tanks outdoors. •Disconnect spark plug wires before cleaning the mower deck. •Use a dust mask when mowing during dry conditions. •Wear protective shoes and clo thing, including ear and eye protection. •Never mow wet grass that will Meeting To Examine Food Safety Regs new USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) Program regulations.
