IS CHOLESTEROL
IMPORTANT
FOR IMMUNITY?
Dr. Magdi Mashaly

The misconception about the
relationship between cholesterol in
the diet and human health definite
ly has had an adverse effect on egg
consumption in the U.S. This, in
turn, results in a reduction in egg
prices and lower profitability for
poultry producers.

It is important to know that
blood cholesterol in humans is not
only derived from dietary sources,
but also is naturally synthesized in
the body. The amount synthesized
in the body depends on die amount
consumed in the diet.
When low levels are consumed,
the body may be required to syn
thesize large quantities to meet
body needs. The reason the body
synthesizes cholesterol is because
of its importance in different vital
physiological functions. For
example, cholesterol is a precursor
of different important steroid hor
mones such as progesterone, estro-

New Della-Flpw™ Milk Filters from Alfa Laval Agri are designed
to perform better than any other filter on the market today.
Seventy-five percent of the dairymen who tested the New Della-
Flow filters believed they retained as much sediment as the
top-rated orange-stripe filters currently on the market and a full '
25% believed New Della-Flow filters retained more.
This superior filtration is due to a special fabric weave that
exceeds burst strength needs by almost 108% and more easily
traps small particles. And the more sediment that’s retained, the
higher the quality of milk and the greater the potential for profits.

The special fabric weave and sewn seam add up to a better
value for you. Why 1 Because those features enable us to fit more of
the New Della-Flow'“ Milk Filters into each box than the orange-stnpe
and other glued-seam competitors. In fact, you’ll find 10% more
filters in each New Della-Flow box for about the same price
That’s a savings you can pocket immediately
What’s more, the savings you’ll realize from the New Della-Flow
filter’s better filtration and milk flow will just continue to add up.

important for reproduction func

certain level of circulating choles

To emphasis this point, we con
ducted an experiment using three
genetic lines of mature male
Japanese quail obtained from Dr.
H. L. Maries, Southeastern Region
al Laboratory, USDA. The first
line was selected for high circulat
ing levels of cholesterol, the sec
ond was selected for low cholester
ol levels, ai.d the third was
unselected and served as a
baseline.
We used two dietary treatments
with each line. One diet contained
2,900 keal/kg ME with 20 percent
protein with .5 percent crystalline
cholesterol added. The second
(control) diet was similar to the
first but without cholesterol added.
Total cholesterol in the blood
was measured in all birds. To mea

In long-term testing among dairymen, nearly 90% rated the New
Della-Flow™ Milk Filter as excellent in terms of milk flow.
This superior milk flow is achieved because of New Della-Flow
filter’s special fabric design and a seam that’s sewn, rather than
glued like the competition. The sewn seam not only makes the
filter easier to install, it provides 4-10% more surface area for
better milk flow. And better milk flow means faster milking and
less wear and tear on valuable milking system components.

We found that when we com

adding cholesterol to the diet
increased blood cholesterol by 700
mg percent (from 250 mg percent
to 950 mg percent). Furthermore,
lymphocyte activity of the quail
fed cholesterol was reduced when
compared to control quail. This
indicated that when cholesterol

when cholesterol levels in the
blood were reduced to 167 mg per
cent in the low line, activity of
lymphocytes were also inhibited
when compared with the high line
that had cholesterol level of 374

These results confirm the notion
that a certain level of blood choles

immune response.
