He began his academic career at Penn State in 1973 as an assistant pro fessor of human development and sociology. He was promoted to associate professor in 1977 and was made full professor in 1981. In 1979, he was named associate dean for resident instruction in the College of Human Development, a position he held until he left Penn State in 1982.
