Spanier earned his B.S. and
M.S. degrees at lowa State Uni
versity and received his doctorate
from Northwestern University. He
began his academic career at Penn
State in 1973 as an assistant pro
fessor of human development and
sociology. He was promoted to
associate professor in 1977 and
was made full professor in 1981.
In 1979, he was named associate
dean for resident instruction in the
College of Human Development,
a position he held until he left
Penn State in 1982.
During his tenure at Nebraska,
Spanier instituted an ambitious
agenda that promoted excellence
in teaching, growing national

graduate studies at the State Uni
versity of New York at Stony
Brook.
Spanier’s wife, Sandra, is an
English professor specializing in
20th Century Amercian Litera
ture, and is also a Penn State
alumnus. They have two children,
Brian (13) and Hadley (10).
