In science, as well as everyday
life, we do not appreciate the
importance of things until we have
m do without them.
At Penn Slate, we have been
studying a small protein found in
many cells called FGF. Although it
i$ found in the most primitive
forms of life, FGF was discovered
only 20 years ago.
Once discovered, it was quickly
recognized that FGF was present
in many cells in the body, includ
ing cartilage cells. The latter
observation led to our interest in
FGF and its possible relationship
to normal skeletal development as
well as skeletal abnormalities that
are prevalent in rapidly growing
broilers and turkeys.
In normal tissue, we have found
FGF to appear, disappear, and
reappear. In tibial dyschondropla
sia (ID) it disappears at the wrong
time, which may account for the
development of the TD lesion.
Therefore, we are continuing our
research in«n attempt to gain a bet
ter understanding of what controls
the appearance and disappearance
of FGF in skeletal tissue.

Information about FGF is also
mushrooming because of its
importance in other areas of sci
ence. It may play a key role in the
development of mammary and
prostate cancer. It plays an essen
tial role in embryonic development
with inappropriate disappearance
being responsible for many birth
defects and the most prevalent
form of human dwarfism.
Because FGF appears very early
in embryonic development,
embryologists have been conduct
ing some clever experiments with
FGF. Implanting FGF-soaked
beads in specific locations at early
of embryonic development
to the development of extra
limbs.
Site of implantation determines
whether the limb is a wing or a leg.
With therisingpopularity of buffa
lo wings, we can. readily see the
application of this technology.
We could develop chickens
which produce six buffalo wings
instead of two. Suppose some
entrepreneur develops a big
demand 'for buffalo drums. This
could lead to chickens looking like

transitional market, inroads being
made to insure a future for the
industry, and how we as investors
can profit in the commercial

Ranch. Mr. Bracket will be dis
cussing how to go about selling
our birds and our industry.
•Dan Lyons—Lyons Ostrich
Ranch. Mr. Lyons’ interest is in
the development of a northeastern
cooperative in association with a
USDA certified slaughterhouse to
give farmers a convenient avenue
to get their birds to commercial
production.

Lloyd Gibson who will discuss
ratite genetics of the future
and line-breeding.
•Purina Mills—As one of the

the Purina Mills Corporation will

be talking about how Purina is
progressing along with the ratite
industry to meet the needs pf the
