Beef Skillathon Draws Juniors To Beef Expo
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
Last Saturday marked the sec
ond annual Pennsylvania Beef
Sldllathon. held during Pennsylva
nia Beef Expo festivities at the
Farm Show Complex.
The event, coordinated by the
Pennsylvania Beef Council pro
vides challenging and leam-by
doing activities to help the deve
lopment of project skills of junior
cattlemen. Activities included
mini-learning stations that tested
participants’ knowledge and abili
ty to perform specific tasks,
including identification of beef
breeds, feeds, equipment, and beef
cut, food safety, and animal health
care.
At the Quiz Bowl, a Series
County showdown look place,
with Berks County Team A, B, and
C competing. The winner of the
event was Berks Team A, consist
ing of Ben Weist, Kelley Dietrich,
Lee Gauker, and Justin Levan.
Second place went to Team B,
comprised of Emilie Miller, Cathy
Levan, Kristy Dietrich, and Brian
Hartman. Team C was third, con
sisting of John Hartman, Matt
Manbeck, Anita Manbeck, and
Dave Newpher.
The Skillathon results are as
follows:
Champion showmanship, left to right, Chad Miller (sec
ond runner-up), Heather Fuhls (first runner-up), and Bree
Taggart (champion showman).
Curt Stockdale exhibited the grand champion heifer, also
the Angus champion.
Casey High, Lltltz, won reserve champion steer overall
with the champion lightweight steer.
At the Skillathon, Ben
Weist was named Junior divi
sion champion.
