STATE COLLEGE (Centre Co.) —The Pennsylvania Depart ment of Agriculture’s Meat Ani mal Evaluation Center is making final preparations for Pennsylva nia’s 22nd annual Performance Tested Bull Sale, scheduled for Friday. March 31 at noon in the Penn State University’s Ag Arena. The sale is to be followed this year by the Pennsylvania Cattle man’s Association annual ban quet The following day, Saturday, April 1. there is an educational symposium scheduled. In the morning, there will be a variety of breakout sessions to provide infor mation for producers witih a wide range of interests. In the afternoon program, a cat tlemen’s production workshop with audience participation is planned. Topics such as castra tion. implanting, condition scor ing, handling vaccines, and nutri tional needs of animals through the year among others will be cov ered. A very good group of bulls is on test this year. The group consists of 32 Polled Herefords, 22 Angus, 2 Red Angus, IS Simmentals, two Charolais, one Limousin, and one Beef mas ter. These bulls have had' their performance already measur ed through 84 days. They com pleted their 112-day testing period on Feb. 28. The top-gaining bull over all breeds so far is the April 9 bom Simmental bull co-owned by Shoemaker Simmentals and Mar shall Simmentals. Kreider, for example, said he is starting a seasonal dairying strategy, which means that for about three months out of the year, he intends to not milk cows. Kreider said he intends to not milk during the hotest part of the year, and to have his herd freshen in the fall, and lake advantage of spring growth of forages and small grains to supplement feed. How ever. he said that he did not intend to use grazing too much in his program, as he wanted to have tight control of the nutrients going into his milking animals. Steve Hershey is an indepen dent producer and family farmer who overall appears to practice more traditional production tech niques, but who also uses BST, prostaglandin and a totally mixed ration. The producers were asked to serve on the panel because each has experienced a measure of suc cess, and because each represents a different strategy toward dairy production.
