(Continued from Pago A3l)
government costs on the
dairy program (which is
already one of the low
est cost commodity
programs); #2 return a
fair price to dairy far
mers; #3 take care of the
nutrition programs; #4
make milk available for
the export program; and
#5 reimburse dairy far
mers for mandated con
servation and environ
mental programs.
The formula that wc
are using to accomplish
the above will return an
adequate price to dairy
farmers on their invest
ment, which they are
presently being denied,
plus the formula will
return an adequate price
to dairy farmers to cover
their unpaid labor and
living expenses which is
not presently being cov
ered adquately.
The formula will use
defensible figures by the
Commerce Department,
the Bureau of Labor Sta
tistics and figures from
the U.S.D.A. Coupling
these figures together
dairy farmers can
receive a pay price at
least equal to the
December 1989 price.
Some people will
argue that our pricing
formula reflects only the
supply factor and does
not consider the demand
factor. Wrong.
The demand figure is
taken into consideration
by the percentage of
utilization in each class
of milk.
However, even more
important is the supply
management part of the
bill that takes into con
sideration the total
demand of dairy pro
ducts by consumers.
Many unfavorable
things may happen this
year to dairy farmers
and other commodity
producers. It’s up to the
.dairy farmers to decide
which programs they
support
