A Gentle Giant
Robert P. Wadlow was not an exceptionally big baby
when he was born on February 22,1918. But at age
2, after a hernia operation, he began growing
really growing. When he entered kindergarten at age 5
he was 5'6" tall. At 9 he was 6'2" and using a specially
made school j|esk. At age 13 he was believed to be the
tallest Boy Scout in the world at 7'4". In the
f)f worldwide notoriety and the consider
able everyday problems his size pre
sented, Robert remained friendly and
kind to everyone he met. Robert was
S'll.l" and 490 pounds when he died at
e 22. He was big, but it was his gentle
Jture that made him a giant among men.

French Farmer’s Baked Beef
and Barley
11/2 pounds stew beef
3 tablespoons oil
1 medium onion, chopped
5 cups beef stock
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon marjoram
1/4 teaspoon rosemary
1 cup barley
1 tablespoon chopped fresh
psrsley rv.
Trim all fat from beef
and cut into 1/2-inch
cubes. Heat oil in large
skillet and saut€ onion.
Add beef and brown on
all sides. Place onion and
beef in 3-quart ungreased
casserole. Combine stock,
herbs, and barley in the
skillet and bring to a boil.
Pour stock mixture over
the beef, cover, and bake
for one hour. Garnish
with parsley and serve
with French bread.
Makes 4 servings.
