Frozen silage? No problem!
For frozen silage and hard-packed
haylage, the Patz cutter-and-claw gathering
chain outperforms augers. This time-proven
chain with its chain-saw cutting action cuts out
frozen silage aggressively. Shouldn't your next
unloader have a gathering chain?

You Ask, You Answer
ANSWER Nancy E. Cummings wanted to know how to
store sweet potatoes so they do not wither. Thanks to Rachel
Fisher, a Quarryville reader, for sending instructions.
Harvest sweet potatoes before the soil temperature reach
es 55 degrees. Try to harvest on a mild day the week of the
first frost.
Be gentle with the potatoes so that the skin is not broken by
the spading fork. Don’t toss the potatoes. Lay them in the gar
den for 30 minutes in the sun. Wrap in newspaper and store in
a warm place 85 to 95 degrees for one week, then at room
temperature for one week, then in a cooler place for the wint
er. I put mine in the basement, which is about 55 to 60
degrees. Use a cardboard box, not plastic, to store the sweet
potatoes. Since I use this method, I can use sweet potatoes
out of my garden all winter.
ANSWER Roland Kamoda, Monongahela, wanted to
know how to pluck a duck or goose and dress it. And, how to
tell the difference between a young duck and a goose. Thanks
to an anonymous reader for writng that she dressed hundreds
of ducks and lots of geese. She writes that ducklings are short
and yellow and have black eyes. They make ducky noises
when fed. Baby geese have longer necks and talk. They fuss
when a person comes near them. To pluck the feathers, the
goose or duck must be dead. Dip body in very hot but not boil
ing water with baking soda added. If the water is too hot, the
skin will scald and come off. It it’s too cold, you can't pull out
the feathers, she often took a stick and brushed the feathers
backwards to let water underneath the feathers.
