MILLVILLE (Columbia
Co.) Members of a recently
formed Pennsylvania Emu Far
mers Association (PEFA) held a
mail-ballot election of officers and
announced that it intends to parti
cipate in the Eastern Emu Expo
and Trade Show, set for May
12-13'at the Lancaster Host
Resort, in Lancaster.
According to its president, Joan
ne Long, of Bloomsburg. the
PEFA organization was created
because of the large number of
emu breeders within
Pennsylvania.
She said that as the membership
within the American Emu Associ
ation has continued to grow, it has
further subdivided into affiliate
chapters.

Pennsylvania Emu Farmers Form Association
The AEA members of Pennsyl
vania, formerly with the Eastern
Region of the AEA are now auto
matically considered to be mem
bers of the PEFA. Through a mail
ing list of members, ballots were
sent out and members elected
officers.
In addition to Long. Michelle
Henninger, of Shippcnsburg, was
elected vice president; Kay Har
mon, of Berwick, its secretary; and
Patricia Russell-Souder, of Per
kiomcnvillc, was elected treasurer.
Long said that the organiza
tion’s first board meeting was
scheduled to be held today (Feb.
18), and part of the agenda would
be to decide when and where to
hold a first statewide meeting. She

said she hoped that the statewide,
meeting would be held in March.
The oranization helps members
promote the emu before the gener
al public, and provides a medium
for fellowship and continued
learning.
The organization has received
preliminary approval to be an affil
iate of the American Emu
Association.
“Primarily, PEFA was formed
to set up zoning within the state,”
said Joanne Long, president.
“There will be eight zones, allow
ing members to hold local meet
ings, get to know each other on a
more personal level, and share the
latest industry information in a
timely fashion.”
Emus are being raised in 48
states in the United Slates as well
as Canada. The AEA currently has
more than 5,300 members.
According to the news release.
