WEST MIDDLESEX (Mercer
Co.) Hundreds of members of
the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein
Association attended the annual
convention held last weekend at
the Raddison Hotelin West Mid
dlesex and gave credance to the
convention theme: Holstein’s
Alive in ’95.
In addition to tours, seminars,
educational and fun-oriented
activities and other types of orga
nizational business, a number of
member achievements were recog
nized during the convention, and
recipients of the association’s dis
tinguished member awards were
announced.
Three members were named as
recipients of a Pennsylvania Junior
Holstein Achievement Scholar
ship, based on work with Hols
teins, community involvement,
school activities and leadership
abilities.
The $l,OOO scholarships are to
be used by each winner to better
themselves through some type of
educational program, according to
the association.
Scholarship winners include
Justin McMurray, of Eighty-Four,
son of John and Patty McMunray,
who is a Penn State University stu
dent majoring in mechanical engi
neering; Amy Packard, of Troy,
daughter of Richard and Marilyn
Packard, who also attends Penn
Stale and majors in dairy and ani
mal science; and Jesslyn Oberholt
zer, of Elizabethtown, daughter of
Clair and Laveme Oberhollzer,
who is a student at Lebanon Valley

Scholarship funds come from
donations and the program is
administered by the state Holstein
Association.
Dairy Bowl
Also during the convention, the
junior members hold dairy bowl
contests and this year 30 teams
competed in two age divisions.
There were 16 junior teams and 14
senior-age teams.
The winner of the junior-age
division was a Berks County team
with members Jennifer Neiman,
Mike Meiman, Erica Davis, Melis
sa Werley, and coach Teresa
Davis. This team came back
through the loser’s bracket to
battle their way for the title, taking
the win after defeating the Craw
ford County team with members
Debbie Duncan, Stephen Kali
nowski, Jason Miller, Jim Kali
nowsld, and coach Lee Livingston.
The senior-age division winner
was a team from Cumberland
County with members Matthew
Day, David Day, Heath Ocker,
John Creek, and coach Ann Day.
The team was undefeated and won
its final round over a Franklin
County team with members
Donald Harwood, Beth Meyers,
Tia Crider, Joel Mills, and coach
Donna Harwood.
Both teams are eligible to repre
sent Pennsylvania in national con
tests during the 1993 National
Holstein Convention, set to be held
in Pittsburgh June 23-28.
