Coalition
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—
The National Com
Growers Association
(NCGA) is pleased to
announce with the 19
state Governors Ethan
ol Coalition (GEC) the
formation of a new
program to expand the
use of ethanol powered
E-85 vehicles. This
joint venture is part of
a larger effort includ
ing the United States
Department of Eneigy
(DoE), state com
grower organizations,
state energy offices
and members of the
ethanol industry.
“The objective is to
break the chicken-and
egg syndrome we have
been caught in for a
number of years,” said
Rod Gangwish, presi
dent of NCGA and a
Shelton, Neb. farmer.
“The problem is that
fuel providers would
not install refueling
facilities until cars
were available and auto
manufacturers were
reluctant to provide
alternatively fueled
vehicles until the refu
eling capabilities were
available.”
The endeavor is an
effort by the two orga
nizations to provide
more than $1 million
in funding to help
facilitate the develop
ment of a refueling
infrastructure in sever
al Midwest states. This
infrastructure will be
designed to service
several hundred cars
being produced by
Ford Motor Company
and distributed by the
General Services Ad
ministration (GSA). In
the first order, 125 cars
will be placed in the
Chicago area and 125
placed in St. Louis.
