Our 1994 S Acre Com Club Report documents another banner year in com production in Pennsylvania
Average gram yields were higher than in am other year While we did not have am record breaking
v telds we dio have high yields on mam of the productive group 3 and 4 this > ear In fact, on
average vields from group 4 soils were higher than others Grain moistures were generally lower bv 1-2
pom is for most entrants, reflecung the good weather experienced by most members On man> fields
•vields exceeded the yield goals and recommended N applicauons On the average N applications,
including manure credits, were about 25 pounds per acre less than would have been recommended for the
vields that were achieved This indicates that N recommendations have an insurance factor built in that
'helps to account for years when growing conditions are ideal Despite the high yields, production records
I indicate the potenual for improvements such as reducing insecticides following crops other than com.
matching P and K applicauons to crop needs, and monitoring the fixed costs involved in com production ;
Although silage entries were limited this year, forage tests indicated low protein on two of the entries
This has been common this year due to the higher rainfall, high yields and losses of N that occurred from
[the soil This emphasizes the need for forage tesung of com silage We appreciate the help of all those ’
who made this report possible members, extension agents, crap consultants and seedsmen I
