Six Weeks of Winter?
Traditionally, Candlemas Day (February 2) was the
day to determine the timing for sowing and planting.
Sunshine on Candlemas Day indicated a return of
winter. In some areas, an animal was part of the folk
lore. A bear brought the news in France and England,
while Germany had its badgers. German immigrants
to Pennsylvania in the 1800 s brought the legend to
America. Finding no badgers, but lots of groundhogs,
they adopted the New World species to fit the lore,
and in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, a star was born!
if Candlemas Day be warm and bright,
Winter will take another bite,
_ But if Candlemas Day
brings cold and rain,
Winter is gone, and
won come again.
