AB-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 28, 1995 Six Weeks of Winter? Traditionally, Candlemas Day (February 2) was the day to determine the timing for sowing and planting. Sunshine on Candlemas Day indicated a return of winter. In some areas, an animal was part of the folk lore. A bear brought the news in France and England, while Germany had its badgers. German immigrants to Pennsylvania in the 1800 s brought the legend to America. Finding no badgers, but lots of groundhogs, they adopted the New World species to fit the lore, and in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, a star was born! if Candlemas Day be warm and bright, Winter will take another bite, _ But if Candlemas Day brings cold and rain, Winter is gone, and won come again. ■a- Revive limp lettuce and celery by placing In a pan of cold water with a couple slices of raw potato.
