4-H Potato Teams
Two Lycoming County 4-H
potato judging teams recently
competed in the Pennsylvania
Farm Show that was held in Har
risburg.
The 14 4-H’ers attending as
three teams and two individuals
were involved in this statewide
competition. They judged potatoes
for size, grade, appearance, and
defects along with 73 other 4-H
members from seven counties.
Coached by Ralph and Tom
Slyer of Muncy, they have been
meeting since mid-November in
preparation for the event. This
year’s “A” team won 3rd place
and the “B” teams won 4th and 6th
planes. The teams consisted of:

Rob said his wife runs the busi
ness and he just helps out. “I think
she does a good job with it,” Rob
said of his Pittsburgh suburb

tion way is the fair way for both
the buyer and seller.
On auction day, Rob and D.J.
wouldn’t get through the flurry of
activity without helpers like Bev
erly Peoples and Mary Ann Seitz,
who clerk and record purchases
and sales, and Don Harnish, who
man-handles the crates.
Rob and D.J. have two daugh
ters, Becky and Chrisy, who took
grand champion honors with their
goats at the Mifflin County Youth
Fair last year.
Occasionally an exotic animal
or two will pass through the auc
tion. White pigeons are popular
for weddings. Permits are needed
to sell ringneck pheasants and
bobwhites. Pairs of peacocks are
popular items. Pot-bellied pigs are
not the rave they used to be.
