Correspondent BEDFORD (Bedford Co.) —“I get nervous when I think I might run out of my goat’s milk soap,” says one steady customer of Judy Burkett who milks, makes, and packages her own line of goat’s milk soap. Offered in a variety of fra grances including vanilla, cinna mon, lilac, bayberry, lavender, exotic spice, jasmine, floral bou quet, and peach rose, Judy says the soap is good for dry or irritated skin. Milk for the soap comes from a herd of seven nubian-pygmy, alpine pygmy, and registered nubian goats owned by Judy and her husband, Lee Myres. “We were just like a lot of other goal owners,” Judy explains. “We always had more milk than we could drink. We used it to feed our other animals, gave it to neigh bors, and still had a surplus. Then, we started making our own cheese and occasionally even some goat’s milk butter. “Still, there was more milk than we could consume,” Judy admits. “Then, I read an article about goat’s milk soap and decided to give it a whirl. Details of the soap’s contents were not revealed so I had to experiment. 1 don’t reveal my own secrets but will say « a Lee’s many other talents. Goat Milk Soap Judy, her goats, and a llama. All of the anifnals mingle together to make one happy family. that it includes animal and veget able oils in addition to the milk.” Judy’s husband helps with cut ting and packaging in the pretty goat sketched paper also designed by Judy. In order to find a better market for the soap, Judy and Lee opened an antique-variety store along famous Route 30. Merchandise includes every thing from the soap to handmade Christmas stockings and jewelry (also made by Judy) to stained glass hangings and lamp shades more I jr w * n soap Induing the ei designed and created by Lee. “We both like to wo* with our hands,” Judy says. “I met Lee when I hired him to build a house for me. We soon found we had a lot in common. When we wanted stained glass kitchen cupboards, we made our own. We enjoy being self-sufficient.” The shop’s location in an old motor repair shop put both their creative talents and seemingly endless energies to the task.
