Co.) The Pa. Junior Holstein
Association annual convention is
scheduled to be held Feb. 10-12 at
the Radisson Hotel, in West Mid
dlesex, and promises to provide
youth with an opportunity to dis
cuss issues, meet fellow enthu
siasts from around the state, parti
cipate in educational workshops
and conduct business.
It all spells excitement for the
junior members and adult leaders.
But the deadline for ordering
convention tickets, and for making
room reservations, is Jan. 25.
There’s not much time left
The theme for this year’s con
vention is, “Holstein's
Heartbeat Alive in ’95,” and
reflects a feeling of vibrancy in the
industry by the young Holstein
enthusiasts.
The committee of junior mem
bers and adult leaders, chaired by
David and Jill Trotter, have put
together a fun and educational
weekend for juniors of all ages,
according to a news release by the
organization.
A wide variety of activities is
planned, including workshops,
tours, a dairy bowl contest, dance,
annual meeting, awards program,
and much mote.

day, Feb. 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. at Thompson’s Dairy Bar on
the Newton-Ransom Boulevard in
Lackawanna County. Reservation
deadline is Monday, Feb. 6 at the
Lackawanna County Cooperative
Extension office.

gram topics will include informa
tion on no-till tomato planting,
growing vegetables for early mar
kets, new methods for weed con
trol, safe use of pesticides, and

requirements if your license
expires December 31, 1995.
In addition to the topics listed
below, there will be a hay judging
contest with some prizes donated
by Central Maryland Farm Credit.

so we will know how many people
to prepare lunch for.

Several educational workshops
with varied topics are to be held.
Dave Dowler, Mercer County
dairy extension agent, along with a
local veterinarian, is to discuss
techniques for safeguarding show
catde, before during and after the
show season.
Melinda Johnson, a Holstein
breeder out of Warren County, is
to give a presentation, “Marketing
Yourself First Impressions
Count.” In her talk, she is to stress
job interview skills and being able
to present yourself to the best
advantage. This presentation is
recommended for all juniors.
Mike Weimer, of Emlenton, a
well-known Holstein breeder, is to
give a presentation on understand
ing pedigrees and how to deter
mine how to purchase cattle.
Weimer is experienced in selecting
cattle for large sales.
The junior association annual
meeting is scheduled for Friday
night, and some different things
have been planned to “liven up”
the program.
According to the news release,
Friday is designed as a time for
junior members to meet and relax,
with music and entertainment by
Magic Raymond, a magician.
On Saturday morning, dairy
bowl contests get underway, with

Sunday morning, the awards
program is to be held at the con
vention center with recognition of
many juniors for achievements in
contests and activities.
According to the release, “This
year’s convention offers a Chaper
one Room, so all the patents won’t
be boggled by kids for the entire
weekend!
“Bonnie Braugh, Ellwood City,
will be a guest speaker. She prom
ises to be humorous, with a
message.”
Chaperones are also to vote on
junior member convention honors,

Another unusual addition to the
convention is to be a roving video
camera person who is to record the
Convention so it can be shown at
other Holstein activities. Junior
members should be on the look-out
for the camera.
Convention commemorative T
shirts should be ordered ahead of
time, and can be ordered along
with a request for tickets. The
shirts come in five different sizes:
small, medium, large, extra large
and extra extra-large.
The price per shirt is $8 and can
be added to the total payment for
tickets, when ordering.

rules in effect, and that approval
and a signature of a parent or guar
dian is required on the request for
tickets.
Rooms at the Radisson should
be reserved by calling (412)
S2B-2SOI, and rooms are $6O.
Those calling should state that the
reservations are being made in
connection with the junior
convention.
