All That Jasz (Jass?) (Jazz?)
The Original Dixieland Jasz Band opened in New
York City on January 17, 1917. They were the first
group to use the strange word that no one knew how
to spell Advertisements for the band's tirst record,
released in March that year, called it "jass,” as did
many of the newspapers reporting on the musical
form Although the unique new sound swept the coun
try. some folks felt it would corrupt young people In
I9IS, the New Orleans Fimes-Puavune called it “a
M musical vice” and urged the city to
“be the last to accept the atrocity
in polite society and make it a
point of civic honor to suppress it ”
