OCIA was conceived in
response to increased consumer
demand for food products without
harmful pesticides, herbicides,
and fungicides, associated with
the conventional agricultural food
production system.
Crop improvement is OCIA’s
most important responsibility.
OCIA seeks to support all
farmers with the technical knowl
edge, skill, and organizational aids
to develop workable crop manage—-
ment systems, capable of supply
ing the growing market demand
for organic food. Justtwhat consti

tutes crop improvement can vary
from farm to farm, ranging from
learning to substitute timely culti
vation for herbicide sprays, to
exploring extremely sophisticated
techniques on the frontiers of soil
and pest management. Farmers
must demonstrate not only a will
ingness to learn and to share, but a
recognition that professional
development is a continuous
process in which there is. always
room for improvement.
Organic farming in southeast

try. and an interest in producing
organic milk. As this demand
grows, (here is a greater need for
certified grains locally. This could
be an opportunity for southeastern
fanners to produce additional
income.
The southeastern chapter of
OCIA will be holding a public
meeting sometime in February.
Watch for more details.
At a recent meeting, Don
Weaver Homestead Farm was
elected president of this chapter,
Roman Stoltzfoos vice president,
Ned MacArthur secretary, and
Enos Hoover treasurer.
