Champion, Reserve Hog Exhibitor Share Some Things In Common
ANDY ANDREWS
Lancaster Farming Staff
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
Often, champion exhibitors at
major livestock events can have
almost nothing in common. How
ever, both supreme champion and
reserve champion exhibitors at the
junior swine show at the Farm
Show had a lot in common.
Both hogs were obtained from
the same place—Howard Parrish,
Eden, Ohio.
Both were Hampshire crosses.
And both grand and reserve
exhibitors had lots of help from
their families.
The grand champion crossbred
hog exhibitor, Bobie-Jo Balzano,
said she had a lot of help from her
family, including her dad and
mom, Ted and Mary, and brothers
Ryan, 11 and Paul, 17. They
helped select just the right pig to
win the grand market champion
from a division with 285 crossbred
hogs vying for the title.
Bobie-Jo. 18, Gallitzin, Cambri
a County, is a freshman at St Fran
cis College in Loretto, majoring in
social work. She showed her
257-pound Hampshirc/Yorkshire
crossbred hog for the first time to a
championship at the Farm Show.
Michele Fetterolf, 13, daughter
of Ken and Joan Fetterolf. Centre
Hall, Centre County, is in the eight
grade at Penns Valley School. She
showed her 258-pound
Hampshire/Duroc cross, “Penny.”
to the reserve championship.

market swine show on Tuesr'
Michele Fetterolf, left, won reserve champion overall market hog with her
Hampshire/Duroc cross on Tuesday at the Junior swine show. At right Is Ed Arnold,
state deputy secretary of agriculture.
Md. show judge and Yorkshire
breeder, said the entire crossbred
championship had hogs that were
“all comparable” in degree of
soundness, muscling, and lean
ness. The hogs look like they’ve
“grown well” he said, and the two
champions showed a comparable
degree of thickness and muscling.
In all, there were a total of 342
hogs at the show. Following is a
list of Show placings.
