HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
It was “All or Nothing” for
Gmmitt McMillan in the market
lamb competition at the Pennsyl
vania Farm Show Wednesday.
Fortunately for 17 year-old
Emmitt, the Suffolk/Hamp Cross
named All or Nothing brought him
the “all” with the coveted market
lamb title.
Emmitt has been raising sheep
for eight years. Although this was
his fust top market lamb win at the
state Farm Show, his sheep are
well-known in the inner circles,
such as the Maryland Eastern
National and at Louisville.
A junior at United High School,
Emmitt said that he will buy more
lambs with the prize money.
“You can know that you have a
good lamb, but it depends on one
person’s decision whether or not
you get the trophy,” Emmitt said.
He hinted that he had a secret for
raising the top market lamb but
said, “It wouldn’t be a secret if I
gave it away.”
Emmitt, the son of Vaugh and
Dale McMilien of Indiana County,
shows hogs at local fairs and is
presidentof his county’s 4-H Club,
a former 4-H ambassador, and a
member of FFA.
He has his sights set on studying
breeding, genetics, and farm man
agement at Penn State.
Reserve champion honors went
to 10 year-old Kyle Fleener who
showed a Suffolk. Kyle raises IS
head of Southdowns on the fami
ly’s Robesonia farm. His parents,
Tim and Sarah Fleener, are well
known Hampshire breeders and
have about 50 ewes.
“I could tell that she was a good
sheep, but you never know,” Kyle
said of the reserve champion. Kyle
is in fifth grade at Fort Zeller
School.
Other breeds contending for the
grand champion market lamb title
included the champion Hampshire
owned by Brandy Homing, a 16
year-old from Huntingdon Coun
ty. Goober was purchased from
Robert Dinsmore of Frederick,
Md.
In her seventh year of showing,
it was the first time she won the
champion breed title. The family
raises 11 ewes on their farm called
Horning’s Hamps. The daughter of
Bruce and Phyllis Homing, Bran
dy is number one in class standing

at Huntingdon Area High School.
The Cheviot market lamb was
shown by Tabitha Ebcrsole of
York. The daughter of Steven and
Lynn Ebetsole said that her brother
Jacob had the champion for the last
two years. This-year she had first
pick from the family’s flock and
beat him.
Kelly Glasser of Limekiln chose
Diane to show as a market lamb.
She helps her grandmother, Ruth
Hartman, raise about 30 head of
sheep.
