Among the more than 30 Bedford County hog owners going to the Pennsylvania State Farm Show in January will be Doug and Randy Koontz, age' 15 and 13. The sons of John and Debra Koontz of Everett are excited about this first-time event for their Champman’s Run 4-H project. Both will be competing in the market hog, crossbred section with their York, Hamp, and Duroc hogs. Doug has nine hogs of his own, although only one will be making the trip. He won reserve champion at the Bedford Fair during the sum mer of 1994 and participated in Keystone, placing Bth and 10th. Both he and Randy have done well in showmanship competition and will be vying for a trophy at the state event. Randy has four hogs but will show one. Testifying to the boys’ dedica tion to their projects, Debra con firms they spend a lot of time work ing with their animals. The Koontz family farms more than 300 acres and milks 75 to 80 registered Holsteins. They raise all of their own animal feed. The family also includes Allen in 12th grade and Ashley, age 3. Other Bedford County hog owners going to the Farm Show will be Michelle Diehl, Amber Eshelman, Loui Martin, Willie Martin, Bill, Mike and Trisha Miller, Nicole Over, Mike Smith, and Nicky Smith. Childers, chairman, president and CEO of the Potash Corpora tion of Saskatchewan Inc. (PCS), was elected chairman of the Potash & Phosphate Institute (PPI) board of directors at a recent meeting. “We are happy that Chuck Childers has accepted this key responsibility with the PPI Board,” said Dr. David W. He began his career with Duval Corporation in Carls bad, N.M., and subsequently joined International Minerals & Chemical Corporation (IMC). At IMC, he held various senior posi tions. In March of 1987, Childers became president and chief execu tive officer of PCS in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He has also served on the board of Saskatchewan Potash Producers Association, including two terms as chairman. He was appointed to the council as well as chairman of the finance committee of the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA). He was named to the boards of PPI and the Foundation for Agronom ic Research (FAR) in 1987 and previously served as chairman in Stables Free Stall Barn Interior 1989-91 Childers is vice-chairman of the Fertilizer Industry Advisory Committee (FIAC) to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and is past chairman of the board of The Fer tilizer Institute (TFI).
