The contest was held at the
Department of Natural Resources
Conference Center near Wye, Md.
Walkersville FFA Wins Land
The contest is sponsored by the
Maryland Association of Soil
Conservation Districts as a special
project of the Maryland FFA
Foundation, Inc.
The high scoring individual for
the land judging contest was
Duane Shenberger, member of the
Clear Spring Chapter. The Freder
ick High School FFA Chapter
took the second place banner in
the contest.
According to contest superin
tendent, Carl E. Robinette, soil

scientist with the United States
Department of Agriculture’s Soil
Conservation Service, 11 teams
were registered with 41 members
participating.
Contestants were asked-to
evaluate soils at three sites for
their capability and limiting fac
tors. The members were then to
recommend the best management
practices for agricultural and
jjonagricultural land uses at each
site.
The top scoring individuals
receiving gold medals were:
Duane Shenbeger, Clear Spring
FFA, first; Diane Ogg, Frederick
FFA, second; Jody Bell, Walk
ersville FFA, third.
National FFA Week Feb. 18-25
ALEXANDRIA, Va. —More
than 428,000 FFA members will
promote FFA, agricultural educa
tion, and the food and fiber indus
try during National FFA Week, on
Feb. 18-25.
FFA members in 7,238 chap
ters across the U.S. as well as
Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin
Islands will be organizing events
and activities to foster awareness
of agricultural education and sup
port for FFA.
This year’s theme, “FFA —The
Leadership Advantage,” will be
seen through communities nation
wide through promotional efforts
of local members. FFA activities
and agriculture classes emphasize
leadership skills, analytical think-

competitive in the global market
place.”
National FFA Week is held
each year during the week of
George Washington’s birthday to
recognize his leadership and com
mitment to American agriculture.
