Penn State Team UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre Co.) Seven students relumed this fall to represent Penn State at five livestock judging contests as members of the 1994 Livestock Judging Team. Team members included Jason Ahola (senior, dairy and animal science, Woodstock, Conn.); Daryl Bomgardner (senior, dairy and animal science, Annvillc); Tom Gibney (senior, dairy and animal science, Colors, Md.); Ryan Mattocks (senior, dairy and animal science, Meadville); Andrew Mclndre (senior, dairy and animal science. White Post, Va.); Gary Schick (senior, dairy and animal science. Oil City); and Nichole Willwert (senior, dairy and animal science. Red Lion). Keith Bryan, instructor in ani mal science, coached the 1994 team, which was the tenth team of students he has worked with at Penn State. The Livestock Judging Team started the fall season with a long trip to the Mid-South Fair in Mem phis. Bomgard ner led the team to a Sth place fin ish in beef cattle, personally com ing in 2nd. He also finished 3rd in sheep and 2nd overall, and the team finished 7th overall. The Mid-Continent Livestock Exposition in Springfield, 111. replaced the Easton States Expos ition in the 1994 judging lineup. After workouts at Quail Run Ranch in Slippery Rock, Ban bury’s Club Lambs in Danville, Ohio, Hoewischer’s Yorkshires and Hampshires in Sidney, Ohio, and an opportunity to judge Maine Anjou and Chiangus/Chianina crossbred cattle at both Wolfe’s and Abernathy’s in Richmond, Ind„ the Penn State team headed to the Springfield competition. They placed 3rd in sheep judging with Bomgardner finishing 4th and Gibney 9th. The team did not per form up to their expectations in swine and beef cattle judging, fin ishing Sth and 9th, respectively. Bomgardner and Gibney fin ished ISth and 17th, respectively,'' in oral reasons and the team “out talked” their placing scores, finish ing Sth in oral reasons.
