Actually, Rudolph was “born" in 1939 in a Chicago
department store' The brainchild of Robert May, an ad copy
writer for Montgomery Ward, Rudolph started out as an
illustrated poem, 2.4 million copies were handed out nation
wide that year In 1947, Johnny Marks set the poem to music,
but no one wanted to record it Then m 1949, Gene Autry
recorded the song, which zoomed to the top of the charts

1/2 cup Putter
1/2 cup apple elder
1/3 cup brown auger
1/2 leaapoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice
Cook, peel, and slice pota
toes. Peel, core, and slice
apples. Melt butter over
medium heat, add cider,
sugar, and spices, and sim
mer 5 minutes. Alternate
layers of potatoes and
apples in a greased 2-quart
casserole, drizzling cider
syrup over each layer.
Cover and bake
' at 350° F for 20
