USD A Reschedules ASCS
Elections
HARRISBURG,
(Dauphin Co.) This
year’s election for posi
tions on County Agri
cultural Stabilization
and Conservation Ser
vice (ASCS) commit
tees throughout Penn
sylvania, which were to
be held in December are
being rescheduled to
accommodate changes
brought on with last
month’s enactment of
the law to reorganize
the USDA.
According to William
Baumgartner, acting
state executive director,
Farm Service Agency,
change in the election
schedule is nationwide
and is authorized under
regulations issued by
USDA. Current mem
bers of ASC committees
will continue in their
posts until the new elec
tion is held next fall.
The laws which reor
ganized USDA created a
new agency,— the Farm
Service Agency (FSA)
encompasses all of
the commodity support
and basic conservation
programs of the former
ASCS, all of the risk
management programs
of the Federal Crop
Insurance Corporation
(FCIC), and the farm
lending activities of the
Farmers Home Admin
istration(FmHA).
Baumgartner said the
new committee system,
when fully implement
ed, will exercise in
creased responsibilities
in its enlarged role.
“Rescheduling the elec
tions on a nationwide
basis avoids confusion
which could OttWf from
hastily drawoWUes and
regulations,” Mwigart
ner said. “autjyW create
efficiencies Vf using
funds which hMd have
been spent on (his year’s
election process to be
used in training commit
tees in performing their
added duties,”
