Saturnalia
From December 17 to 23, the ancient Romans stopped all
work and celebrated the festival of Saturnalia. A tribute to
the winter solstice as well as Saturn, the god of agriculture,
Saturnalia was a time to celebrate the fecundity of the fields
and the people But it was also a time when schools were
closed, war making ceased, and all men whether slave or free,
rich or poor, were declared equal Anger, resentments, and
threats were against the law Libamus, a fourth
—TVjjJ century Greek, wrote "A stream of presents
pours itself out on all sides It may justly be said
that it is the fairest time of the year " Little won
der that the early Christian church incorporated
many aspects of this pagan festival into the
Christian feast day it later became
n e merry In heart have a continual feast.

the 2 5 billion disposable bat

portion of them are disposed
