Tim said. “Our nutritionist gives
us a worksheet and Wade works
off of that. He watches the cows
and does all (artificial insemina
tion). He went to AI school and is
doing a super job.
“But that’s his responsibility. If
I see in the morning that there’s a
cow in heat, and tell him, it’s his
responsibility to take care of that.”
Sturgeon’s Dairy MAP
influenced new attitude for success
apparently means total success,
not just improved cash flow.
“This Dairy MAP taught me
how to come home and try to work
with the rest of the family and the
rest of the help,” Tim said.
“It’s not difficult to give up
(control). It would be if die boys
were not interested. In other
words, I have enough faith in them,
that if I turn a job over to them, it
will get done right.
“My past experience is that if
any one of our boys sets his mind
to doing something, he will do it
right, and if he can’t do it right, he
will come to me and ask.
“I’ve never given any jobs to my
boys that they refused to do.
There’s no fussing, because we
take turns doing stuff (disliked
chores).

“Young people have to have
responsibility, and they have to
realize that responsibility is their’s
and not someone else’s,” Sturgeon
said, adding his own opinion to
what he brought from Dairy MAP.
“I think that’s a problem with a
lot of parents they don’t
encourage their children to take
responsibility.
“You can’t tell a kid they’re
dumb, or lazy. If you tell them
they’re lazy, they’re going to be
lazy,” Sturgeon said.
“You have to give praise once in
a while, even if the job is not right,
it was better than the last time. You
can’t cut up your family or your
help and expect them to do a job,”
Sturgeon said.
This year, the program has been
changed somewhat. There are
three separate workshops offered,
starting with a basic workshop
called Managing for Success
(MFS).
After completing the MFS
workshop, participants are eligible
to pursue the other two
workshops one for financial
management, and another for labor
management.
A total of 27 MFS workshops
have been scheduled for the com
ing year, running from January
through April, and the locations
have been selected to ensure that
every dairy manager or would-be
... come in for a demonstration

HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
Spend a few hours helping to
promote the slogan We All Live
Downstream by volunteering for
the 1995 Farm Show. The Penn

help man the exhibit during the
show which runs from Saturday,
Jan. 7 - Thursday, Jan. 12.
Volunteers will hand out litera

enter the annual trivia contest, in
which knowledge of water quality
issues is tested. You don’t have to
be an expert to volunteer. Each
shift will include at least one expe

affect local water quality and life
in the bay. Shift hours are flexible.
Many volunteers sign up every
year, and enjoy taking in the Farm
