The following illustrates how a sinkhole was repaired in Cumberland County.

The sinkhole is then
filled with smaller, 2B
stones to a depth of
two feet.

1). In the first of a series of photos of
a sinkhole repair in Cumberland
County, first the six-foot deep hole
is widened and cleaned using a
backhoe to expose the bedrock
and cavity.

6) As a last step, about two feet of clay soil is
filled in and compacted on top: In this
case, the site will be used for a manure
pond, so a concrete pad is added as a
final step.

2) Next, the sinkhole
is filled with large
field-type stones,
some measuring
up to IV2 feet in
diameter.

5) On top of the sand filter is
placed a special fiberglass
filter fabric. This helps prevent
the fine-grained soil from
entering into the coarse
material below and adds
stability over the area.
