John and Lynn Zerphey, owners
of Sheepberry Farms, Halifax,
took a second look at a white Bor
der Leicester ram lamb a few
months after his birth in June
1993'.
Rampart, as he was named,
was among a group of market
lambs to be sold. The overall con
formation and wool quality was
evident at this early age and the
Zerpheys decided to keep him as a
possible breeding ram.
The decision to keep the white
Border Leicester ram was later
confirmed at the York Interstate
Fair, where Rampart’s fleece
received three ribbons, first place,
champion white fleece, and
reserve grand champion of the
fleece show.
The Zerphey’s also showed
wool at the Keystone International
Livestock Exposition, held at the
Farm Show Complex in October.

Between the two fleece shows,
The York Interstate Fair and The
Keystone International Livestock
Exposition, Sheepberry Farms
received a total of 23 ribbons - Six
first place, seven second place,
three third place, one fourth, three
fifth, and one sixth place award,
plus a champion rosette ribbon
and reserve champion ribbon.
The harsh long winter of 1993-
1994 put some extra stress on the
wool. Having to feed the sheep in
the barn for those long weeks of
drifting snow and ice resulted in
more hay in the fleeces than usual.
Overall, the Zerpheys are
pleased with their showing and
very proud of Rampart. They are
looking forward to his offspring,
due in May 1995, and they hope
for some future wool champions
