FFA Selects Snyder
David Snyder, Hamilton, N.Y.,
started out with a push mower, a
gas can and snow shovel. Now this
entrepreneur operates Snyder Ser
vices, a successful residential and
commercial mowing, landscaping
and snow removal business. For
his career achievements, the
National FFA Organization has
selected Snyder for the 1994
American Star in Agribusiness
Award.
Snyder, 21, began his business
in 1984 servicing customers on his
street by mowing lawns on week
ends and shoveling snow before
and after school. Today, Snyder
Services hires one parttime and
four full-time employees.
“When I bought my first lawn
mower and started mowing four
neighborhood lawns, I never real
ized that I was starting my future
business,*’ Snyder said.
Snyder provides services for 25
commercial and 70 residential
properties in the Hamilton, N.Y.,
area. “I offer year-round service to
my customers. During the winter
months I remove snow, salt, and
sand, and clear walks and drive
ways. A large number of my cus
tomers have asked for my help all
year.”
Additionally, he donates ser
vices to the local Food Cupboard
and SOMAC, the Southern Madi
son County Ambulance Corpora
tion.
Snyder’s success has come
with hard work, as well as a dedi-

helps his employees understand
customer relations and improve
their communications skills.
Snyder, son of Howard and
Patricia Snyder, has been recog
nized by the National FFA Orga
nization in the past for his business
and leadership skills. He has been
named State Star Agribusiness
man, regional winner of the Turf
and Landscape Proficiency
Award, and National Agricultural
Sales and/or Service Proficiency
Award winner.
Adviser of the Hamilton FFA,
Neil Lamb, said, “David took
complete advantage of the SAE
program. He developed a program
and has made it into his profes
sion. I have been most impressed
with his professionalism and pride
in his business. The payoff has
been loyal and satisfied cus
tomers.”
FFA Names Johnson
Brian Johnson, Gotebo, Okla.,
did not begin his agricultural
career on a traditional family farm.
However, his determination and
the support from his family helped
make his goals for a successful,
diversified agricultural enterprise
come true. For his accomplish
ments as an agricultural leader and
producer, Johnson, 21, has been
recognized by the National FFA
Organization with the 1994 Amer
ican Star Farmer award.
Johnson’s family background
is rural, but not typical. His family
bought 60 acres and some sheep
back in 1978 as a way for his
father to “relax” after his job.
Johnson became responsible for
the sheep when he was eight years
old and developed a love of live
stock and an early appreciation for
hard work that became the founda
tions for his present agricultural
enterprises.
In 1989, Johnson oversaw 100
acres that he rented. He went on to
own that land and purchase the
machinery necessary to maintain
it. After a series of acquisitions and
agreements, Johnson’s enterprises
grew to include the 160 acres he
owns, the 100 acres he rents, and
the 1,120 acres he has in partner
ship with his father. The sheep
flock consists of 250 ewes includ
ing 90 head of his own and 20 head
purchased with his father. The rest
belong to his sister and father.
The addition of rented acres to
Johnson’s program has allowed
him to diversify into a fullscale
stocker cattle operation to comple
ment his sheep, wheat, forage, and
cotton operations. The cattle oper
ation, a partnership venture for
Johnson and his father, has had as
many as 450 head, and his cow
calf herd includes 21 cows and one
bull. “Aside from cash flow, grow
ing pains have been my biggest
problem.” said Johnson. “Rapid
growth in cattle numbers drastical
ly increased labor and manage
ment time because of makeshift
facilities. I decided to build perma
nent receiving and shipping facili
ties that allow two men to do the
work of four in less time.”
Johnson has been recognized as
regional winner in both thc'Agri
cultural Electrification and the
Diversified Livestock Proficiency
awards. In 1990, he was named a
national winner in the Home
and/or Farmstead Improvement
Proficiency Award, and in 1991 he
was named Star Farmer of Okla
homa.
The son of two former teachers,
Bradley and Sue Johnson, Brian is
a full-time student at Cameron
University.
