We Gather Together
The first Thanksgiving at Plymouth was a three-day feast m
heartfelt gratitude for survival, but most of the thanksgiv
ings in our country's early history were to celebrate victo
ries in battle. The first national day of thanksgiving was pro
claimed by the Continental Congress on December 18,1777,
to celebrate the defeat of the British at Saratoga. These were
patriotic occasions, quite separate from the local harvest fes
tivals The first nationwide Thanksgiving Day that combined
patriotism, harvest, and religious observances was in 1863.
But was not unt '* 1941 that
I Thanksgiving Day was permanently
1b fixed for the fourth Thursday in
\ November.
