Travel in Time
Traveling by rail in the “good old days” was not always so
good Each railroad scheduled arrivals and departures in
terms of the particular city and each city set its own time
(usually based on the Sun’s position over city hall) On
arrival, the traveler didn’t know if he was “on time” or not,
because of local variations In Pittsburgh, for example, the
city had its official time, but each of the six railroads and the
Allegheny Observatory each had its own time, too The rail
roads themselves used 101 different times nationwide All
that changed on November 18, 1883, when the
(a) railroads adopted the four time zones we know as
K Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Despite
dire predictions, it work out so well in the U S.
that Standard Time zones soon expanded to

Mow that the shopping sea
son is upon us, remember
to take along bags from
home on your next shopping
trip Canvas tote bags are
great, but even plastic and
paper bags from your last
shopping spree can be
reused (Everyone seems to
have a supply of these
stashed in a drawer or cup
board ) If you forget, ask for
a large bag with your first
purchase and add all subse
quent purchases to that bag.
You’ll avoid struggling /
with dozens of bags and
you’ll save resources in
the process.
