A3B-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 12, 1994 Nine Counties Eligible For Disaster Loans WASHINGTON. D.C. As a result of requests for aid for Pen nsylvania producers who suffered severe crop losses this year, the U.S. Farmers Home Administra tion has been authorized to offer low-interest emergency loans. The loans are restricted to those producers in nine Pennsylvania counties, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. Harris Wofford. Those counties whose farmers are eligible are Erie, Potter, Came ron, Clinton, Crawford, Lycom ing. McKean, Tioga, and Warren. Earlier this year, severe crop losses of potatoes were reported in those counties due to a late season blight, a disease that thrives in moist, humid conditions, such as was experienced this summer. Particularly hard hit were the potato growers, and advisories have been issued through the Penn State Extension Service for pro ducers to be cautious in their selec tion of potato seed for 1995, because the blight problem was not restricted to Pennsylvania, but has affected the entire potato industry, though effects were not necessari ly as severe as in those nine counties. According to Wofford, each application for disaster assistance will be considered on its own mer its, taking into account the extent of losses, security available, repay ment ability, and other eligibility requirements.
