USING CORN
TO REDUCE
WINTERING COSTS
OF COWS
Com prices are at their lowest
level in a number of years. So. too,
are cattle prices, which implies
many producers need to find ways
to reduce costs if they expect to
remain profitable in feeder calf
production.
One of the highest costs asso
ciated with the production of feed
er calves is wintering costs for the
cow herd. Using com as part of that
program may help reduce costs
and improve productivity.
The major nutritional need for
spring-calving cows at this time of
year is energy. Protein require
ments are at their lowest level for
the entire year, and they can easily
be met with most hay or other
forages.
The standard for feeding energy
is usually hay, silage, or haylage
because that is what most farms
have available. However, these
feeds often have a high cost of
energy. The following table indi
cates how the cost per megacalorie
(1,000 calories) of energy varies
among different feeds.
A cow doesn’t really care where
the energy comes from, so it may
be a good idea to look at some dif
ferent combinations of feed to pro
vide the energy at a lower cost. The
following table uses the differ
ences in energy cost to show how
feed costs can change by adding
com as a supplemental source of
energy for wintering cows.
Implications: The best form of
com to use is probably whole, dry
shelled com. It is usually the
easiest to locate and store. The cost
of processing will not make up for
any increase in efficiency of use.
Hay intake will have to be
reduced to make costs go down.
This may or may not be practical
for some producers. Feeding high
levels of com to cows allotted to all
