’ Ml»«4W?ibi* FLEMINGTON, N.J. The Hunterdon County 4-H Open Beef Show was held recently here at the Remington Fair. The show was judged by John Neilson of Brookfield, Nova Scotia, Canada. 4-H members from throughout the state were on hand to parade their heifers and steers before judge Nelson. The show started off with the Angus heifers. Dana’s SS Erica, exhibited by Dana Mickel of Glen Gardner, N.J., was selected the grand champion Angus Heifer. Carries STK Lady, exhibited by Carrie Mickel of Glen Gardner, was named reserve cham pion Angus heifer. Shaun Burger of Pitman, N.J., exhibited First Edition, a May 1993 Polled Hereford heifer to the grand championship of the Hereford class. Jennifer Lawton of Far Hills, N.J., exhibited the grand champion Simmental heifer, C3BO, a Septem ber 1993 heifer. Jennifer also showed the reserve champion Simmental heifer, D4ll, a March 1994 heifer. In the cow/calf class, Jennifer Lawton exhibited her Simmental cow and March 1994 heifer calf to the championship of that class. For the overall heifer champion, Judge John Neilson selected Dana Mickel’s Dana’s SS Erica, an April 1993 Angus heifer, as champion. Overall reserve champion heifer was C3BO, a Simmental heifer shown by Jennifer Lawton. In the showmanship contest, Jen nifer Lawton of Far Hills, N.J. won first place among beginners. Shawn Burger of Pitman, N.J. won the intermediate division. Carrie Mickel of Glen Gardner won first in the senior division. The overall champion showman was Came Mickel. She received the Don Kmffen Showmanship Achievement Award. This award is a plaque named in honor of Don Kmffen, who for more than 30 years was in charge of the 4-H livestock program for the state of New Jersey. He also ran the state 4-H baby beef show and sale during that period. The overall winner of the show manship contest at the Hunterdon County 4-H Open Beef Show will have their hame out on the plaque and it will hang in the Hunterdon County Extension office. The steer show started off in the afternoon with the Angus class. Dana Mickel showed Ideal’s Line backer an April 1993 steer from Ideal Angus Farm of Augusta, N.J. to the grand championship. Rose Marie Sylvester of Wilhamstown N.J. showed her April 1993 steer Sapphire to the reserve champion Angus steer. Sap phire also came from the Ideal Angus Farm of Jake Tanis. Amanda Sylvester of Williams town, N.J. showed her September steer to the championship of the Hereford division. Her steer, Straw berry came from Battleground Farms of Salem, N.J. Adriene Malsbury of Freehold, N.J. showed her May 1993 steer Buddy to the reserve champion of the Hereford class. Amanda Sylvester showed her Simmental steer Socks to the champi onship of that breed. Socks is a May 1993 steer from the herd of Meadow Hill Farms in Purcellville, Va. The cross-bred champion was an April 1993 steer Zorro, shown by Adnene Malsbury. Reserve champi on crossbred steer was a Feb. 1994 steer shown by Jennifer Lawton.
