Poultry Team Competes At Eastern States
NEW HOLLAND (Lancaster
Co.) Four members of the
Grassland FFA at Garden Spot
High School represented Pennsyl
vania in the Eastern Regional FFA
Poultry Judging Contest in Spring
field, Mass.
The students qualified for the
Eastern National competition by
placing second in the state in June.
They put in many hours of hard
work studying about poultry sci
ence and management in addition
to refining techniques for judging
hens and pullets, giving oral rea
sons and grading dressed birds,
eggs, and other poultry products.
At the Eastern States Exposi
tion, the Pennsylvania team, com
prised of sophomores Bryan
Hoover, New Holland and Danny
Laudermilch, East Earl along with
Brian Beck, Denver, placed third
out of the 15 states in the North
east.
Individually, Danny Lauder
milch placed fifth, Brian Beck
ninth, and Bryan Hoover 12th.
Team alternate Ken Martin of
East Earl, whose scores did not
count in the team competition,
would have tied for fifth place in
the competition among more than
40 of the top FFA poultry judges
in the region.
Said team coach Robert Lauf
fer “I was really pleased with the
progress all four of these young
men made. They worked hard and
their efforts paid off. They espe-

Lauffer noted that this was
only the third formal competition
in which these young judges had
competed. (The Lancaster County
Contest and the State Contest
were the other two)

Bryan Hoover said, “Everything.
It was a great weekend and a great
experience. I can’t single anything
out. Mr. Lauffer told us if we
worked hard, we’d be in the thick
of it and he was right. He also
told us we’d relax and have a lot
of fun once we got there, and we
did!”
