AB-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 29, 1994 * A Good Day for Music Two men bom on November 6 made a great impact on the world of music. Adolphe Sax was a Belgian musician and inventor born in 1814, and John Philip Sousa, American composer and band conductor, was born in 1854. Sax, the eldest of 11 children of a musical instrument maker, invented the saxophone and a family of brass wind instruments for band and orchestra, the saxhorns. Sousa employed some of those instruments to create his stirring marches. After lead ing the U.S. Marine Corps Band for 12 years, Sousa formed his own band in 1892. The “March King” toured the U.S. and j / Europe from 1900 to 1905 and took on a M 1 world tour in 1910. The best known of his 'sA many pieces is “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Music is the universal language of Eaiipßß* mankind. —H W Longfell ow ns- Clothing zippers wilt wear better and last longer if you always close them before washing.
