dent, and treasurer in 4-H groups
and has donated time to help out
at the James Wilson Safe Harbour
homeless shelter in Carlisle.
Matthew Day of Shippensburg
was the winner of the Outstanding
Boy award. He is a member of the
Dairy Club, has been in public
speaking contests and done radio
spots, is a county council repre
sentative and contest judge and is
president of the County wide Hol
stein Club.
The Outstanding Junior was
Jennifer Beck, who has been a
4-H member since 1989. She has
been involved in horse and veteri
nary science projects, been a camp
counselor and is a county council
representative.
LeAnne Haycock, a 2-year 4-H
member was the winner of the
Wildlife Audubon Society Award.
She won first place on the wildlife
habitat judging team last year, and
second place this year in the state
competition.
Last year, Haycock went
before the Shippensburg School
Board and convinced the board
members to let her teach a wildlife
project to a class of students.
The Outstanding Fair Exhibit
award was taken home by the East
End Explorers Community Club.
The club is more that 40 years old
and still has the same organiza
tional leader, Mabel Strock.

tary Award. Brehm raises market
lambs and is a county council rep
resentative.
Rebecca Cornman was the
runner-up for the secretary award.
Matthew Day was in the win
ner’s circle again when he won
the Outstanding News Reporter
Award. He is an eight-year mem
ber of the Countywide Dairy
Club.
The runner-up for the news
reporter award was Michelle
Comman.
The Outstanding Treasurer
Award went to Betsy Walton,
who is a member of the County
wide Dairy Club, president of the
county council, and a teen leader.
Meri Witter was the runner up
for the treasurer award.
Betsy Walton also won the “I
Dare You” Award. The Carlisle
High School student went to the
Pennsylvania Farmer Coopera
tive Summer Institute and Inter
state Exchange.
Another winner of the “I Dare
You” Award was Peggy Myers,
who participated in the Inter-state
Exchange, was a camp counselor,
participated in the State Capitol
Day and was a member of the
National Congress. She is a stu
dent at Boiling Springs High
School.
The Club of the Year Award
was won by the Flying Fingers of

odoquinet Sheep Club took sec
ond place in that competition and
the countywide Dairy Club cap
tured third.
The Carlisle Aeromodelers
took home the Speak Out Night
Award.
In the adult awards, the Gladys
Holtry Award for the outstanding
4-H leader went to Mae Hem
minger of Newville.
Leaders Mabel and Clyde
Strock of Mechanicsburg won the
4-H Global Award. The 4-H Fish
and Wildlife Recognition Award
was won by Robert Glennon of
Newburg.
The 4-H Spirit Award was
accepted by Chris Renner on
behalf of York Farm Credit.
Several 4-H leaders also were
honored for their years of service.
Sandy Long was recognized as
a 30-year leader and Mary Orris
was honored for 20 years of ser
vice. Ten-year leaders were
Robert Allen, Dianne Conaway,
Curtis Day and Mary Stets.
Fifth-year leaders who were
cited were Darlene Anderson,
Debbie Cornman, Steve Corn
man, Sue Fisher, Shawn Hensel,
Phyllis Martin, Ethel Myers and
Lois Zeigler.
Congratulations also were
given to the winners of national
awards.
John Creek, Matthew Day,
LeAnne Haycock and Meri Wit
ter won the Achievement award
from the Ford Motor Company
Fund. Jamie Glennon. Derek
Heine, Danielle Sheppard, and
Jonathan Stets won the Aero
space Award from the 4-H Devel
opment Fund.
Matthew Day, Emily Dietrich,
Mandy Naugle, and Betsy Walton
captured the Agriculture Award
sponsored by Case IH and Purina
Mills Inc. Jennifer Creek and
Wendy Holtry won the bread
Award from Fleischmann’s Yeast
Inc.
The Citizenship Award spon
sored by the Coca-Cola Founda
tion was won by Tara DeAngelo,
Emily Fisher, Kim Orris and
Natasha Zelger. Rebecca Corn
man, Jennifer Creek, Emily Fish
er and Jill Fraker captured the
Clothing Award offered by Coats
and Clark and the Singer Sewing
Company.
